Origin and history
La Ferme des Prés, located in Vareilles in the Yonne department (Burgogne-Franche-Comté), is an 18th-century agricultural building. It is distinguished by its typical organization of the large farms of the time, with a closed courtyard, buildings dedicated to the breeding ( stables, cowries, sheepfold) and a dovecote housing 300 nests. This last element, rare and symbolic, contributed to its classification as a historical monument in 1996.
The first records of the farm date back to 1656, when it belonged to Jacques Huerne, a lawyer in Parliament. In 1678 she passed into the hands of the priests of the Congregation of Versailles, then becoming the "Farm of the Lords of Vareilles". Sold as a national good in 1791 during the French Revolution, it illustrates the political and economic upheavals of this period. Today, it is converted into biological exploitation.
Architecturally, the farm is characterized by a dovecoier-poche marking the entrance, a distinctive feature of seigneurial farms. The facades and roofs, protected since 1996, demonstrate its heritage importance. Its history also reflects the evolution of agricultural practices, from the Old Regime to the present, with a modern adaptation to sustainable agriculture.
