Origin and history

La Ferme Varet is a farm located in Yolet, in the Cantal department (region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes). Built in the 2nd quarter of the 19th century, it illustrates the architectural transition between the traditional farms of the Cantalian plateaus and those of the southern part of the department, marked by southern influences. The house, dating from 1833, and the barn-stable of 1843 (enlarged in 1929) combine local volcanic materials, lauze roofs, and a high structure with wooden exterior gallery.

Originally, the site belonged to the Carrier family, one of which was a revolutionary figure at the end of the 18th century. The current buildings are the result of a complete overhaul in the 19th century, preserving typical elements such as a vaulted cellar, a squid, and an interior wooden staircase. The interior layout reflects a rational domestic and agricultural organization, with spaces dedicated to housing, storage and agricultural activities.

Classified as a historic monument by decree of 21 August 1992, the farm Varet is distinguished by its state of conservation and hybrid architecture. The protected elements include the gallery house, the barn- barn opposite, and the stone floor of the courtyard. This site reflects the evolution of agricultural practices and architectural styles in the Cantal between the 18th and 20th centuries.

The farm also embodies a vernacular heritage marked by the use of local resources (volcanic stone, lauze) and adaptation to the climatic constraints of the Auvergne highlands. Its height plan, rare for the time in the region, suggests a desire to maximize living space and storage, while integrating aesthetic elements such as the wooden gallery.

Today, the Varet farm remains a historical and architectural landmark for the municipality of Yolet, offering an overview of the 19th century rural lifestyles in the Cantal. Its inscription in historical monuments underlines its heritage importance, both for its building and for its role in local agricultural history.
