André Pavlovsky - Architect Designer of the lighthouse and its twin.

Origin and history

The upstream alignment fire of the Port of Ciboure, built in the 2nd quarter of the 20th century, is part of a marine marking system designed to guide ships to the port. It was erected in 1936 by architect André Pavlovsky, along with his twin, the lighthouse of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, with which he formed an alignment: green for Ciboure, red for Saint-Jean-de-Luz. This lighthouse replaces an anterior fire, a square tower with terrace, whose structure Pavlovsky has integrated into the base of its new construction, keeping in particular the guardrail in visible corbellation on the south facade.

The monument is distinguished by its square plane and its volume refining towards the top, underlined by two superimposed gable walls crowned with a pediment. The northern facade, facing the ocean, has a vertical strip painted in green, visually connecting the floors. The first two levels once housed the guard's home. The lighthouse was listed as a historic monument on October 8, 1993, but is not accessible to the public.

Located in Ciboure (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), this lighthouse illustrates the functional architecture of the 1930s, marked by an integration of modern techniques and a clean aesthetic. Its role in coastal navigation, coupled with that of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, reflects the strategic importance of the Basque port in the maritime trade of the Atlantic. The region, then oriented towards fisheries and trade, benefited from these infrastructures to secure access to its coasts.
