Origin and history

Figeac History Museum is an ethnographic institution located in the town of Figeac, in the Lot department. It preserves and exhibits collections reflecting the history of the city and surrounding territory, enriched by donations from travellers and benefactors. This museum carries collective memory and showcases objects of local and distant cultures, offering a look at past exchanges and curiosities.

Originally, the museum occupied the first floor of the Mint Hotel as the Old Figeac Museum. He was then transferred and reorganized into the rooms of the former Puy Seminary College, a historic site located in the height behind the church of Notre-Dame-du-Puy. This new layout is inspired by cabinets of curiosities, an ancient museum concept combining scientific, artistic and exotic objects. The museum was inaugurated in its new premises on 23 November 2012 before reopening to the public in July 2013.

Labelled Museum of France by the Ministry of Culture and Communication, this establishment plays a key role in preserving and valuing the local heritage. Its varied collections, often from donations, illustrate both regional history and travel stories, offering visitors an immersion in the past of Figeac and its inhabitants. The museum is thus part of an educational and cultural approach, accessible to a wide audience.
