Origin and history
La Tour de Floirac is a medieval monument located in the commune of Floirac, Lot department, Occitanie region. It was listed as historic monuments by order of 8 August 2013, which attests to its heritage importance. The tower is located on the causse de Gramat, a limestone area characteristic of Quercy, marked by wild landscapes and rich biodiversity.
Floirac, a rural commune of 248 inhabitants in 2023, is crossed by the Dordogne and Tourmente. Its territory, included in the Dordogne basin, has been classified as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO since 2012. The tower is part of a preserved natural environment, with protected areas such as the Geopark of the Quercy causses and Natura 2000 sites, such as the "Redden Valley of the Quercy Dordogne".
Local heritage also includes dolmens and religious buildings such as the chapel Saint-Roch (15th century) and the church Saint-Georges (17th century). The Floirac Tower, although less documented than these other monuments, illustrates the medieval history of the region, marked by ancient human occupation and defensive or symbolic architecture. Its recent inscription among historical monuments highlights its architectural value and its role in local history.
The commune of Floirac, with its scattered habitat and rural economy, has experienced a population decline since the 19th century, from 1,526 inhabitants in 1861 to 248 in 2023. The tower, owned by the municipality, is integrated into this historical and natural landscape, where agriculture (polyculture and poly-breeding) and heritage tourism play an important economic role.
