Origin and history

The church Saint-Jacques de la Folie-Herbault is a religious building located in the hamlet of La Folie-Herbault, on the former commune of Fains-la-Folie, now integrated with Eole-en-Beauce (Eure-et-Loir). Dated from the 13th century, it belongs to the parish of Saint-Martin in Beauce, under the diocese of Chartres. Its architecture is characterized by a rectangular flat bedside plan, a bell tower-wall supported by foothills, and degraded murals depicting the apostles and heraldic motifs.

In the 16th century, the church was enriched with a northern chapel and a large south window with flamboyant reamping, typical of this period. Inside, several 16th and 17th century statues (a bishop, Saint James, Saint Barbe) and a 17th century polychrome wooden cross are listed as historical monuments. A bell dating from 1723 completes this remarkable furniture.

Classified as a historical monument by decree of 12 September 1905, the church is now owned by the commune. Its state of conservation, including its murals and statues, reflects the vicissitudes of time, while at the same time demonstrating its heritage importance in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Available sources, such as the Bulletins of the Eure-et-Loir Archaeological Society, document its history and architecture.
