Origin and history
The Strasbourg cannon foundry was built in 1642 on the site of an old municipal arsenal dating back to 1430, which was integrated into the 13th century fortifications. It reused the structures of a convent in Clarisses and part of the city walls. This site, a symbol of the Strasbourg autonomy, became a strategic tool for artillery production, especially in bronze, before being integrated into the French royal domain after the city's attachment in 1681.
Under the authority of the new directors appointed by the king, the foundry was technically innovative, as evidenced by the cannon "Sompteux", emblematic bronze piece. The rectangular building was adapted to accommodate newly cast artillery pieces. Its three-storey main gable features a pediment gate and ornaments added in the 18th century, reflecting its architectural evolution.
Ranked a historic monument in 1929, the foundry retains protected facades and roofs, located on the Schoepflin wharf and the inner courtyard. Its heritage inscription underlines its role in the military and industrial history of Strasbourg, between medieval heritage and modernization under the Ancien Régime. The current address, 18 Place Broglie, continues its central location in the city.
