Fontaine (no CADASTRE) : entry by order of 9 July 1970
Origin and history
La Fontaine aux Dauphins de Lons-le-Saunier, originally located rue du Collège (former Rue Sébile), was built in 1727, as indicated by the date engraved on its structure. She was attached to the first convent of the Tiercelines, now extinct. This monument, typical of 18th century hydraulic architecture, reflects the importance of water points in thermal cities such as Lons-le-Saunier, then booming.
In 1776 the fountain was moved during the drilling of Rue du Four, a major urban redevelopment. It was then installed at its current location on Perrin Street, where it remains as a witness to the local historical heritage. Its inscription in the Historical Monuments in 1970 allowed its preservation, although its cadastre is not specifically referenced.
The fountain, owned by the commune, illustrates the urban transformations of Lons-le-Saunier in the 18th century. Its baroque style, marked by carved dolphins, evokes the influence of Italian models in the French hydraulic achievements of the period. Today, it remains a symbol of the Jurasian heritage, despite a GPS location that is considered to be imprecise (level 5/10).
