Fontaine Chataigner : inscription by order of 30 May 1984

Origin and history

La Fountain Chataigner is a public fountain located in the commune of Bléneau, in the department of Yonne, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Built during the 4th quarter of the 19th century, it embodies the utilitarian and decorative architecture typical of this period, marked by the beautification of urban and rural spaces. Its location on Châtaignier Square makes it a central point of local life, reflecting the importance of fountains as sources of drinking water and places of sociability at the time.

Listed under the title of historical monuments by order of 30 May 1984, the fountain Chataigner bears witness to the desire to preserve the water and architectural heritage of the region. This type of monument, often commissioned by the municipalities, played a key role in public hygiene and village organisation. In Burgundy, as elsewhere in France, the 19th century fountains were symbols of modernity and progress, sometimes incorporating artistic or commemorative elements.

Their preservation today makes it possible to understand the technical and social developments of this pivotal era.
