The fountain: inscription by decree of 11 May 1932

Origin and history

The Châtenois Fountain is a historical monument located in the commune of Châtenois, in the department of Bas-Rhin, in the Grand Est region. Built during the second quarter of the 18th century, it is distinguished by its central location on Place de la Mairie. This type of fountain, typical of the Alsatian public squares, served both as a water point for the inhabitants and as a decorative element reflecting the prestige of the city.

The Châtenois fountain is now protected for its heritage value. It belongs to the municipality and is a testimony of 18th century civil architecture in Alsace. Its inscription in the Merimée base and its precise location, confirmed by sources such as Monumentum and Wikipedia, make it a key element of the local heritage.

At the time of its construction, public fountains played an essential role in the daily life of villages and small towns. They provided a source of drinking water and served as a meeting place for the inhabitants. In the 18th century Alsatian context, marked by a rural and artisanal social organization, these buildings also reflected the aesthetic and practical ambitions of local communities, often supported by municipal or seigneurial authorities.
