Origin and history

The Cucuron Fountain came into being in 1588, when a first structure was erected at this precise location. This monument, located in the village of Cucuron (Vaucluse), reflects an ancient desire to develop a central water point for the local community. Although little detail is available on this first construction, its existence marks the beginning of a history of water supply and social life in the village.

The 1854 project completely redefines the present aspect of the fountain, integrating a set of basins arranged in the hemicycle to the west. This renovation, part of a process of beautification and modernization, reflects the hygienist and aesthetic concerns of the nineteenth century. The fountain, classified as Historical Monument by decree of 28 October 1949, thus illustrates the evolution of urban and architectural practices in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur.

Today, the Cucuron fountain remains a central part of the communal heritage, located at 26 Rue du Portail de Pertuis. Owned by the commune, it embodies both a historical heritage and a living place that is always frequented. Its inscription in the title of Historical Monuments underlines its cultural and architectural importance for the department of Vaucluse and the Provence-Alpes-Côte d的Azur region.
