Fontaine dated 1743: inscription by order of 25 June 1929
Origin and history
The fountain of Gex, also known as the Four Goulet fountain, is an emblematic monument located in the commune of Gex, in the department of Ain. Dating from the second quarter of the eighteenth century, this fountain is a typical example of the hydraulic architecture of this period. It was erected in 1743, as its engraved date indicates, and is distinguished by its four pouring beaks, hence its nickname.
The fountain was listed as historical monuments by an order of 25 June 1929. This ranking reflects its heritage significance and historical value to the region. It is located on the Grande-Rue de Gex, a central location that highlights its role in the daily life of the city since its construction. Today, it remains a landmark for residents and visitors.
The fountain of Gex is a communal property, which means it is managed and maintained by the municipality. Its inclusion in the Merimée base, as well as its mention in sources such as Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its protected heritage status. It illustrates the importance of public fountains in the 18th-century French cities, where they served as both a water and a place of sociability.
