Origin and history

La Fontaine de La Ferronnays is a public fountain in Lisieux, Calvados department, Normandy. Built at the end of the 18th century, it is distinguished by its utilitarian and commemorative character, reflecting the values of sharing its time. Its location, west of the city centre, makes it a landmark of local heritage.

The fountain was erected in 1784 to celebrate the arrival of Bishop Jules-Basile Ferron de La Ferronnays, the new bishop of Lisieux. The latter, refusing the unnecessary expenses of a reception in his honour, requested that the funds be allocated to a project useful to the community. Thus was born this fountain, a symbol of its modesty and its commitment to the inhabitants.

Ranked as a historical monument since November 18, 1919, the fountain is now protected for its heritage importance. It embodies a period when public works served as much urban beautification as collective memory. Its architecture and history make it a valuable testimony of the 18th century in Lower Normandy.
