Origin and history

The Vallenet Fountain, also known as the Place de l'Ancienne-Halle Fountain, is a public fountain located in Aubusson, Creuse department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. It is located in front of the Vallenet house, a local family whose name remains associated with the monument. Built in the first quarter of the 18th century, this fountain is a typical example of the urban developments of the period, aimed at providing drinking water to the inhabitants. Its architecture is distinguished by a polygonal basin, composed of singing slabs, and a central pillar decorated with masks spitting water, characteristic of the Baroque fountains of this period.

The fountain is dated precisely from 1718, an information engraved or attested by historical sources. It was listed as historic monuments on June 15, 1926, recognizing its heritage and architectural value. Today, it belongs to the municipality of Aubusson and remains a central element of the Old Hall square, testifying to urban history and water practices of past centuries. Its exact location, Place de l'Ancienne-Halle (or place of Liberation according to the sources), makes it a landmark in the city center.

Public fountains such as Aubusson played an essential role in the daily life of cities before the arrival of running water. They served not only as a water supply, but also as a meeting and exchange place for the inhabitants. The Vallenet Fountain, with its basin and sculptures, also illustrates the importance attached to aesthetics and symbolism in the urban developments of the Ancien Régime. Its inscription as a historic monument highlights its interest in both practical, artistic and memorialism for the local community.
