Fountain of the Sirene, including the cast iron motif, at the corner of the two streets (Box NO CADASTRE; PUBLIC AREA): inscription by order of 31 July 1990
Origin and history
La Fontaine de la Sirène is an emblematic monument of the city of Poligny, in the Jura department (39). Built in the 18th century, it is located at the corner of Hyacinthe-Friant and Jules-Grévy streets, in an accessible public space. Its most remarkable element is its cast iron pattern, typical of the fountains of this time, which gives it an artistic and historical character.
Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 31 July 1990, the fountain is protected for its cast iron motif and its overall structure. It belongs to the commune of Poligny and is located on the public domain, without specific cadastre. Its location, although noted as 'passable' (level 5/10) in the databases, remains a landmark in the city centre, between two busy streets.
The fountains of the 18th century, like that of the Sirene, played a central role in the daily life of French cities. They served not only as a water supply, but also as a place of sociability and urban beautification. In Poligny, a city marked by an artisanal and commercial history, this fountain reflects the importance attached to aesthetics and public utility in the development of shared spaces.
