Origin and history

The Recoles Fountain, located in Viane, is a historical monument built in the 16th and 17th centuries. It is distinguished by a circular base pierced by a small door, supporting a central basin with a banded octagonal barrel. The latter wears an octagonal basin from which two iron ducts in the shape of a fish head escape. A rectangular barrel extends the structure and supports a round-bosse statue. The ensemble is surmounted by a pyramidal block adorned with an imberbic figure with a rigid cap, surrounded by a strawberry, evoking the fashion of the late sixteenth or early seventeenth century. A heraldic lion is carved underneath.

Stylistic analysis dates back to the fountain of the second half of the 16th century. According to the oral tradition, it would come from the Château de Roquecurbe. The fountain consists of two stone basins: a small polygonal upper basin and a larger circular lower basin, resting on a masonry massif. The whole is surmounted by a quadrangular pyramid trunk. The fountain was listed as a historical monument by order of 13 July 1927.

The fountain of Recoles illustrates architecture and late Renaissance art, with decorative elements such as strawberry and heraldic lion, symbols of prestige. Its style reflects the artistic influences of the time, combining functionality and aesthetics. The precise location of the fountain is indicated as being at 5211 Recoules, 81530 Viane, in the department of Tarn, in Occitanie region.
