Origin and history
The Saint-Brieuc fountain, located in the village of Cruguel in Morbihan, dates from the seventeenth century. It presents itself as an architectural edicle with a niche framed by two pilasters, surmounted by a triangular pediment and a cross. Four steps lead to a swimming pool below, and a washhouse was attached to it after the destruction of the former parish church in the late nineteenth century. Originally, the fountain was backed by the enclosures of this church, now extinct.
Ranked a historic monument on 29 March 1935, the fountain suffered an accident on 23 February 2020 when a vehicle hit it, partially destroying it. It was rebuilt between February and July 2021, with an official inauguration scheduled for 23 October 2021. The summital cross was redone in the same way, while the original statue was replaced by a cast iron representation of a holy bishop.
Architecturally, the fountain combines religious and utilitarian elements, reflecting its historical role as both a place of devotion and a community water. Its current isolation, after the reconstruction of the parish church in the south of the village, highlights its evolution in the local landscape. The wash added in the 19th century testifies to its adaptation to the needs of the inhabitants, while preserving its sacred dimension.
