Origin and history
The fountain of Saint-Paul-de-Vence, located Place de la Grande-Fontaine, was built in 1615 by Melchior Martin, a stone tailor from the village. This Provencal-style monument is distinguished by its four cannons pouring water into a central basin. Its location, in the heart of the village, made it a historic gathering place, especially for the weekly markets authorized by Charles II of Anjou as early as 1285.
The fountain has been represented by many artists, painters and photographers, reflecting its cultural and aesthetic importance. In 1615, the Wednesday market was added to the traditional Saturday market, strengthening its central role in local economic life. Every year, the vegetable fair held on Saint Luc's day, attracting colporteurs and inhabitants.
Ranked as historical monuments on October 4, 1932, the fountain is now a symbol of Saint Paul de Vence's heritage. It belongs to the municipality and remains accessible to the public, thus perpetuating its social and cultural function since the seventeenth century. Its location, near the Porte Royale and Rue Grande, makes it a must-see point for visitors.
