Origin and history
The Fountain of Sainte-Marie was built in 1824, as evidenced by a dedication to the monument. It is located in the commune of Sainte-Marie, in the Doubs department, in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Its architecture is distinguished by a small square building housing the arrival of water, supplemented by two rectangular basins. An inscription on the back of the fountain mentions names and year of construction.
The fountain was listed as a historic monument by order of 6 March 1979, thereby recognizing its heritage value. It is located precisely at 9 rue de Lougres, in a modest urban setting but marked by its public utility. The property of the monument belongs to the commune of Sainte-Marie, stressing its role in local life.
This type of fountain, typical of the early 19th century, reflects the water supply needs of rural or semi-urban populations of the time. In Burgundy-Franche-Comté, public fountains were often essential gathering points, serving both as a utilitarian and social space. Their construction addressed hygiene and convenience issues, in a context where access to running water was still limited.
