Origin and history

The Cordeliers Fountain, located in Mirepoix, is a historical monument dating from the 3rd quarter of the 17th century. It consists of three main elements: a square niche dug into the rock to capture the waters, a rectangular basin covered in a vaulted room, and a stone bench surrounding this nymph. The ensemble is decorated with a 14th century warhead portal, probably from a local church or from the Cordeliers convent, reused as frontispiece. An engraved date, 1659, suggests an arrangement prior to this period.

The portal, characteristic of Gothic architecture with its three rows of archvolts, contrasts with the classical structure of the fountain. This re-use of medieval elements in a 17th century construction illustrates a common practice of recovering materials or ornaments from abandoned religious buildings. The fountain, classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 28 November 1927, thus bears witness to the superposition of periods and styles in the local heritage.

The building, located at 58 Barthas in Mirepoix, is listed in the Historical Monuments inventory for its architectural and historical interest. Its state of conservation and its location, noted as "a priori satisfactory" (level 6/10), make it a remarkable example of the water and religious heritage of Ariège. The fountain, although protected, does not have accurate information about its current accessibility or contemporary uses.
