Origin and history
The Douarit Fountain, also known as the Saint-Nicolas Fountain, is an emblematic monument located in Saint-Nicolas-du-Pélem, in the Côtes-d'Armor department in Brittany. It is located 30 metres below the church of Saint-Pierre, at the place called Saint-Eloi, and is along the street of Daourit. This fountain is distinguished by its architectural structure: a niche preceded by a portal resting on two baluster-shaped columns. It is surmounted by a statuette of Saint Nicholas in a shell niche, and its basin is sheltered by a capital supported by two columns. The granite set consists of five basins and is 9 metres long, 7 metres wide and 2.2 metres high.
The fountain dates from the 17th century and is considered by Pierre Thomas-Lacroix as the first to have used columns at that time. Its water comes from a spring under the adjacent construction and joins the Daourit Creek, which once fed a washhouse that was now extinct. This creek comes partly from Kerody in Bothoa and partly from the edge of the forest of the Faodel, on the farm of Stang-Merrian. The fountain was listed as historical monuments by order of 24 March 1926, thus highlighting its heritage importance.
The fountain is located at the address 5 Rue du Daourit, on a land not cadastre owned by the commune. It is open to the public, although its state of conservation and accessibility are not specified. Its architecture and history make it a key element of local heritage, reflecting the religious traditions and social practices of the region in modern times.
