Origin and history
La Fontaine du Gigot is part of the exceptional water heritage of Pernes-les-Fontaines, a village in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region that owes its name to its many fountains. Unlike classical spa towns, Pernes-les-Fontaines is distinguished by some 40 fountains scattered in its centre, the first records of which date back to the 15th century. The municipal archives retained decisions of the city's consuls, such as that of March 3, 1596, which prohibited washing in fountains to preserve clean water for livestock. This heritage reflects the historical importance of water in everyday life and communal organization.
In the 17th century, the discovery of a spring near the chapel Saint-Roch motivated the construction of four new fountains, marking the beginning of a lasting enthusiasm for these works. This interest continued until 1936, when the municipality officially added "les-Fontaines" on behalf of the city. La Fontaine du Gigot, specifically, was protected as historical monuments by a decree of 29 September 1928, highlighting its heritage value.
The fountains of Pernes-les-Fontaines illustrate the evolution of local social and hygienic practices, from a purely utilitarian use (drinking livestock) to an aesthetic and identity dimension. Their preservation bears witness to the municipality's desire to value this unique heritage, which today attracts visitors for its historical charm and architectural originality.
