Fontaine du lavoir : inscription by order of 2 December 1948

Origin and history

The Fountain du Lavoir de Cotignac is a historical monument located in the commune of Cotignac, in the department of Var (region Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur). It is precisely at the course Gambetta, a 13 central location of the city. This wash, typical of the collective infrastructures of the past, was included in the inventory of Historical Monuments by ministerial decree on December 2, 1948.

Today, it remains owned by the municipality and illustrates the importance of public water points in the traditional urban organization. Public washhouses, like Cotignac, played a major social and practical role in the villages of Provence. They served as a meeting place for the inhabitants, often in charge of laundry, and reflected the community habits of the time.

Although the details of its construction are not specified in the available sources, its inscription in 1948 underscores its heritage and architectural value. The location, noted as "a priori satisfactory" (level 6/10), allows to situate it with relative accuracy in the current urban fabric.
