Origin and history

The 16th century fountain of Rumengol, classified as a Historic Monument, stands in the Faou in the Finistère. Its architecture combines a cubic base, an octagonal barrel and a rough shield, characteristic of the Breton fountains of this time. It is said to have been erected at the end of the 15th or early 16th century on an older religious site, thus marking spiritual continuity in the region.

The fountain was restored in 1792, as evidenced by the inscription J : GUEN : F engraved on its structure. It is adorned with statues representing Saint Guénole and Saint Fiacre, probably dated from the 16th century, as well as a half-relief of the Annunciation executed around 1500. These artistic elements underline its role both religious and community, typical of Breton fountains associated with devotional or pilgrimage practices.

Protected by an order of 18 October 1926, the fountain now belongs to the commune of Faou. Its location, Place de la Fontaine, and its state of conservation make it an emblematic local heritage, although the accuracy of its geographical location is considered mediocre (note 5/10). Available sources, such as the Merimée and Monumentum base, confirm its historical and architectural importance in the Breton landscape.
