Origin and history

The fountain of Arinthod is an emblematic monument located in the Jura department, in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Built in the third quarter of the 18th century, in 1750, it is located on the church square, in the heart of the commune of Arinthod. This fountain has been classified as historic monuments since 6 January 1971, highlighting its heritage importance. It bears on one of its faces the engraved weapons of Arinthod, symbol of its local anchorage.

The construction of this fountain in the 18th century was part of a period when urban developments, such as public water points, played a central role in the daily lives of communities. These infrastructures often reflected the prestige of the villages and their ability to organize collective works. In the Jura, as in other rural areas, fountains served not only as a water supply, but also as a meeting place and exchange for the inhabitants.

Classified as a historical monument, the Arinthod Fountain is protected by its architectural and historical value. Its location on the church square reinforces its link with the religious and communal heritage of the city. The weapons engraved on its structure recall the local identity and administrative history of Arinthod, while offering a typical example of the artistic and functional achievements of the era.
