Fontaine-lavoir de Collonges (Box B 748) : inscription by order of 8 May 1973
Origin and history
The Collonges wash fountain is a building located in the commune of Saint-Sorlin-en-Bugey, in the department of Ain, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built during the 4th quarter of the 18th century, this wash fountain illustrates the importance of collective water infrastructure in the villages of this time, combining a practical function for the inhabitants and an aesthetic or monumental dimension.
Listed under the title of historical monuments by order of 8 May 1973, this fountain-leather bears witness to the attention paid to the vernacular and utilitarian heritage during the twentieth century. Its status as communal property emphasizes its anchor in local daily life, while guaranteeing its preservation. The water fountains, typical of rural areas, served both as a water source for domestic chores and as a place of sociability for the inhabitants, including lavender.
The precise location of the wash fountain, mentioned as being on the Grande Rue in Saint-Sorlin-en-Bugey, reinforces its integration into the village's urban fabric. Although the available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) do not detail its architecture or its possible stylistic peculiarities, its inscription among the historical monuments of Ain attests to its heritage value. This type of building also reflects the hygienist and social concerns of the Enlightenment, when it was erected.
