Origin and history
The fountain of Saint-Bonnet-le-Château, dated from the 17th century, was distinguished by its central structure consisting of a square pillar supporting an upper basin. Four metal collars allowed water to drain into nets, while a small central pillar, surmounted by a globe and a cross with circular arms, completed the building. Hemispheric grilling connected the basin to the axis of the globe, and wrought iron bars facilitated the filling of containers. Originally installed in Place Marchande (today place of Commander Marey), this fountain is mentioned from the first quarter of the 15th century, although its current construction dates back to the 17th century.
Several restoration campaigns marked its history, notably in 1778 and 1810, where its leaks were repaired and its basin expanded. Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 28 June 1938, it was unfortunately destroyed around 1940 for reasons of convenience. The sommital cross, the only preserved vestige, was then moved on the summer of the Chabrier cross. Its circular basin, lined with cut stones and a forged iron circle, as well as its ingenious hydraulic system, demonstrated artisanal know-how and major community importance.
Originally, water fed the high basin before draining through peripheral pipes, illustrating both practical and aesthetic design. The fountain, owned by the commune, was a central part of local life, reflecting the need for drinking water and social exchanges in the marketplace. His inscription as Historic Monuments in 1938 underlined his heritage value, despite his later disappearance. Today, its historic location, between Place du Marché and Place de la République, recalls its past role in the urban landscape of Saint-Bonnet-le-Château.
