Origin and history

The Place Saint-Georges fountain is a historic monument located in Haguenau, in the department of Bas-Rhin (Great East region). It is precisely at the intersection of Saint George's Square and the Grande-Rue, in the heart of the city. This monument was listed as historic monuments by order of March 20, 1939, recognizing its heritage value.

The fountain has undergone several transformations over the centuries. It was rehabilitated in the second half of the 18th century, then its central amount was endowed with a neo-Gothic pillar probably added in the second quarter of the 19th century. In 1885, this pillar was replaced by a basin, while the current basin would date from the third quarter of the twentieth century. These changes reflect the stylistic evolutions and functional needs of the city throughout the eras.

Owned by the commune of Haguenau, this fountain is part of the urban landscape as a testimony to the hydraulic and aesthetic arrangements of the past centuries. Its architecture thus combines various influences, from neo-Gothic to more recent additions, illustrating the continuous adaptation of public monuments to the tastes and uses of their time.
