Fontaine near the town hall: registration by decree of 29 April 1931

Origin and history

The Wasselonne Fountain is a historical monument located in the municipality of the same name, in the department of Bas-Rhin, in the Alsace region (now Grand Est). It is located precisely near the town hall at 69 Rue du Général de Gaulle. This type of fountain, common in the Alsatian villages, served both as a central water point and a gathering place for the inhabitants.

Ranked a historic monument by decree of 29 April 1931, this fountain illustrates the importance attached to the preservation of heritage elements related to water and traditional urban planning. Public fountains played an essential role in the daily lives of communities, providing a vital resource while structuring the social space. Their architecture often reflects local styles and available materials, such as sandstone or limestone, typical of the region.
