Fontaine Saint-Eflam (cad. AB 38): inscription by order of 20 January 1926
Origin and history
The Saint-Eflam Fountain is an 18th-century monumental building located in Plestin-les-Grèves, in the Côtes-d'Armor department in Brittany. It is distinguished by its square plan reinforced with diagonal foothills, its bays in basket cove, and a stone vault surmounted by a cross. Built of granite and schist bellows, it incorporates two empty niches for statuettes. Its architecture reflects the local techniques of the time, while serving as a place of popular rituals related to love, jealousy or divination.
The fountain is deeply rooted in local traditions. Lovers threw a pin attached to their beloved's damn thing: if it floated, it proved her innocence. Jealous husbands or victims of theft would go there fasting to throw crusts named after suspects; the one left behind identified the culprit. These practices, attested until 1832, illustrate the social and symbolic role of the fountain in the community. It was classified by order of 20 January 1926, recognizing its heritage value.
Located below the chapel of Saint-Eflam, the fountain is part of a landscape marked by the popular Breton religiosity. Its stone dome and architectural elements (buttress, carene vault) make it a remarkable example of the monumental fountains of the region. Owned by the commune, it is today a testimony of the 18th century artisanal beliefs and know-how, while remaining a place full of history and legends.
Available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) highlight its cultural and architectural importance. Its exact address, 15 Rue des Carrières, and its Insee code (22194) confirm its territorial anchoring in the Côtes-d'Armor. The fountain, although without statuettes today, retains a mystical aura, linked to centuries of ritual practices and oral transmission.
