Fontaine: registration by decree of 28 October 1949
Origin and history
The Fountain of the Obelisque de Cucuron is an emblematic building located in the department of Vaucluse, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. This monument, which has been listed in the inventory of historical monuments since 1949, is distinguished by its architecture and its central role in local life. Its history dates back to at least 1588, when a first fountain was erected on this site. The current state, however, corresponds to a project of 1854, which also included the creation of a set of basins arranged in the hemicycle west of the fountain.
The fountains occupied an essential place in the Provencal villages, serving as both a water supply, a meeting place and a symbol of prosperity. In Cucuron, as in many municipalities in the region, these hydraulic structures reflected local know-how in water management, a valuable resource in the Mediterranean climate. Their construction and maintenance were often linked to communal initiatives or local patrons, although the available sources do not specify the exact actors involved in this project.
The designation of the fountain as historic monuments in 1949 underscores its heritage and architectural value. This status not only protects the structure itself, but also its immediate environment, reflecting the importance attached to the preservation of historical water-related elements in southern France. Today, the fountain remains a landmark in the urban landscape of Cucuron, illustrating the continuity between the past and the present in this region rich in history.
