Origin and history
La Fontaine des Danaïdes is an iconic monument located in Marseille, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Built during the first quarter of the 20th century, it is located precisely in the Stalingrad Square, in the first district of the city. This fountain is an example of monumental public art of this period, integrated into an urban space in full transformation.
La Fontaine des Danaïdes was designed by the sculptor Hugues Jean, whose name is explicitly associated with this work in the archives. It was classified as a Historic Monument by a decree of March 4, 2025, which reflects its heritage and artistic value. The fountain is fully protected, including its location on the non-cadastre public domain, as indicated in the official documents. It belongs to the commune of Marseille, which underlines its importance for the local heritage.
The Stalingrad Square, where the fountain is located, is a central place in the Marseille landscape. The location of the fountain, although noted as having poor accuracy (level 5 out of 10), remains a cultural and historical landmark. Available data from sources such as Monumentum confirm its status as a protected monument and its integration into the urban fabric of Marseille. The fountain thus embodies a period of artistic and architectural development in the city, while reflecting the cultural influences of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region at the beginning of the 20th century.
