Origin and history
The Fountain of Neptune de Carcassonne, classified as Historic Monument, was completed in 1770 by the Italian sculptors Barata father and son. It is distinguished by its central basin in incarnate marble, surmounted by a square base decorated with inscriptions and coiled motifs. Four mythological figures – two tritons and two naiads – animate the composition, framing dolphins spitting water jets, symbolizing Neptune's mastery of the elements.
The monument is organized into several levels: the carved base supports a basin decorated with mascarons and garlands, from where a statue of the god Neptune emerges on a pedestal. Water, springing in cascades around the structure, strengthens the scenographic effect. This fountain, typical of baroque taste for movement and theatricality, also reflects the influence of Italian artists in France in the 18th century.
Listed in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 26 March 1926, the fountain is now owned by the commune of Carcassonne. Its location on Carnot Square, in the heart of the city, makes it a central part of the urban heritage. The noble materials (incarnate marble) and the precision of the sculptures bear witness to remarkable artistic know-how for the time.
The location of the fountain, although documented (9 place Carnot), is considered "a priori satisfactory" in terms of geographical accuracy, according to the Merimée bases. Its state of conservation and its integration into public space underline its role both practical (water point) and symbolic (representation of marine power and abundance).
