Origin and history

The fountain of Patience, located in Laval in the department of Mayenne, was built in 1761. Originally called Poil-de-Chèvre in 1589, it was placed on Rue de Rennes, at the outlet of the Roquet-de-Patience. In 1956, she was transferred to the Place des Quatre-Docteurs-Bucquet. It bears a Latin inscription engraved on a black marble table, evoking its transformation from muddy water into a clear source for the inhabitants.

Made of Sacé granite, the fountain presents a niche framed with pilasters and surmounted by an entrapment. The Latin inscription mentions the names of the municipal magistrates of the time, including Le Pennetier des Salles, Pichot de la Graverie, and Enjubault de la Roche. The latter supervised his erection, as attested by the engraved date of 1761 (MDCCXLI).

The fountain was classified as a historic monument by order of 5 April 1930. It symbolizes the improvement of urban living conditions in the 18th century, with easy access to drinking water. Its move in 1956 reflects the urban transformations of Laval, while preserving its historical heritage.

According to Abbé Angot, Charles Frin du Guiboutier, a former member of the town hall, also contributed to its realization, although this information requires confirmation. Today, the fountain remains an architectural and historical testimony of the city of Laval.
