Origin and history
Sennecey-le-Grand is a public building located in the municipality of the same name, in Saône-et-Loire (Bourgogne-Franche-Comté). This rectangular monument is characterized by an open structure on its four sides, housing a central basin made of cut stone. Its roof covers the entire building, typical of the 19th century washhouses, when these infrastructures played an essential social and hygienic role in the villages.
Built in 1821 by architect Zolla, native of Chalon, this wash-basin fountain was designed to meet the daily needs of the inhabitants, especially for washing linen. It demonstrates the importance of collective water points in the rural community organisation. Enlisted as historical monuments since September 10, 1941, it also illustrates the desire to preserve a vernacular heritage linked to the practical and social life of past centuries.
Today, this monument remains the property of the municipality of Sennecey-le-Grand. Although its original use has disappeared with technical progress, it is a significant architectural and historical vestige, recalling the domestic practices and community exchanges that were rhyming local life in the 19th century. Its location, in the Viel-Moulin district, reinforces its anchoring in the city's urban and memorial landscape.
