Fontaine d'Aigues-Passes : inscription by decree of 16 October 1945

Origin and history

The fountain of Aigues-Passes, located in Mende in the department of Lozère, was built around 1825, during the first quarter of the nineteenth century. This monument is distinguished by its square basin, adorned with half-circular swellings on each side, where the pipes of the weir end. A walk over the pelvis, and a paving surrounds the structure, embellished with break-wheeled stone balls at intersections of the straight and circular parts.

Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 16 October 1945, this fountain is owned by the municipality of Mende. Its location, at the intersection of Rue d'Aigues-Passes and Boulevard Théophile-Roussel, makes it a central part of the local urban heritage. The accuracy of its location is estimated as fair (note 5/10), based on available data.

The fountain illustrates the utilitarian and decorative architecture of the public fountains of the early 19th century, when access to drinking water became a major concern in French cities. Its sober and functional style reflects the practical needs of the period, while integrating aesthetic details such as stone balls, typical of the urban developments of this period.
