Fontaine des Tanneurs: registration by decree of 16 November 1949
Origin and history
The Tanneurs Fountain is a monument located in the town of Aix-en-Provence, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department. It is located precisely rue des Tanneurs, although some sources also mention the place des Tanneurs. This monument has been included in the inventory of historical monuments since November 16, 1949, which shows its heritage importance for the commune and the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.
Public fountains, like that of the Tanneurs, played a central role in the daily life of Provençal cities. They served not only as a water supply, but also as a meeting and exchange place for the inhabitants. In Aix-en-Provence, a city with a rich historical and artistic past, these fountains often reflect the architecture and urban needs of past times.
Their preservation makes it possible to understand the evolution of water and social infrastructures in Mediterranean cities.
