Origin and history
The old forge of Auchy-la-Montagne is a historical monument located in the village of the same name, in the department of l'Oise (Hauts-de-France). Dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, this building illustrates the traditional architecture of the Picardy Plateau, with its apparent wood sections and torchi. It consists of three distinct parts: a workshop, the forge itself, and a cochère door. The vantals of the latter bear inscriptions dated 1796 and the year 4 of the Republic (1796), reflecting the transition between the Ancien Régime and the French Revolution.
The building, registered with the Historical Monuments since 1986, is characteristic of the rural forges of the period. Its rectangular plan and its preserved elements, such as the adjacent well, testify to local artisanal and metallurgical activities. The forge, now owned by the commune, retains traces of its past use, although its current state and accessibility are not specified in the available sources. Its modest but functional architecture reflects the importance of small industrial structures in the Picardy countryside.
The inscriptions on the vantals, combining the Gregorian calendar (ANNO DOMINI 1796) and revolutionary (25 MESSIDOR AN 4), underline the pivotal period of its construction. This rare historical detail makes it a material testimony to the political upheavals of the late eighteenth century. The approximate location (55 Yves Maréchal Street) and the cartographic accuracy considered passable (note 5/10) suggest a monument anchored in its territory but whose heritage visibility could be improved.
