Origin and history

The former headquarters of the Société des Mines de Lens, built in 1903 in Lille by architect Louis-Marie Cordonnier, embodies the opulence of the regional industrial era. Its neoclassical style is distinguished by noble materials and a refined decor, including a monumental bronze staircase illuminated by a zenithal window. The hall of the board of directors, entirely lambrished, and a bronze bas-relief signed Hyppolite Lefebvre ("The science of fruitful work") underline its prestige.

The building incorporates mining symbols, such as tools and the company's intertwined "L" initials, scattered in interior settings. Ranked a Historic Monument in 2014, it reflects the economic influence of coalfields and local architectural know-how. Now private property, it retains its status as an emblem of the Nordic industrial heritage.

The official address, 30 rue Thiers in Lille (Northern Department), confirms its anchoring in the city centre. Although its GPS location is approximate (note 5/10), its registration in the general inventory (Merimée base) and its full protection make it a major heritage site. Creative Commons licensed photographs, such as those of Velvet, document its current state.
