Origin and history
The Gallo-Roman Forum of Feurs is a historical monument located in the commune of Feurs, in the Loire department (42), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. This archaeological site, typical of Roman cities, served as a political, religious and economic centre during ancient times. Its remains, protected by a registration order in 1983, are spread over several cadastral plots and belong in part to the commune and private owners. Some elements remain freely accessible to the public.
The location of the forum, estimated with a priori satisfactory accuracy (note 6/10), places the site near the Place de la Boaterie. This area, like other Gallo-Roman forums, was to structure local urban life, welcoming markets, civic gatherings and cults. The forums were symbols of Romanization, integrating the Gaulish populations into imperial administration and culture.
The remains of Feurs, although partially preserved, illustrate the strategic importance of the city (Forum Segusiavorum), capital of the Gaulish people of the Ségusiaves. Their protection in 1983 underscores the heritage value of the site, despite the absence of detailed excavations or restorations in available sources. No additional information on archaeological campaigns or major discoveries is included in the data consulted.
