Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban - Military engineer Associated with fort (unconfirmed paternity).

Origin and history

Bouc Fort, located on the Bouc islet in Martigues (Bouches-du-Rhône), is a military structure transformed into a lighthouse in the 19th century. Built at the entrance to the Caronte Canal, connecting the Mediterranean with the Berre pond, it marks access to the Lavera oil port. The site, which has been listed as historic monuments since 1930, has recently been restored. Its history combines coastal defence and maritime signage, with electrification of the lighthouse in 1936 and automation in 1998.

In 1840, a cylindrical masonry turret was erected on the existing tower of the fort, with a first fixed white light. The military downgrading of the fort in 1889 left only the lighthouse keeper as the only resident. The site was then transferred to the War Department in 1932, before being occupied by German troops between 1942 and 1944 during World War II. The current metallic turret, painted in grey, still supports the automated headlight.

The fort is associated with military engineer Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, although his direct paternity on this work is not explicitly confirmed in the sources. Its strategic role, both defensive and maritime, makes it a witness to technological developments (electrification, automation) and conflicts of the twentieth century. Today, there remains a major visual landmark for navigation in the Gulf of Fos-sur-Mer.

The administrative coordinates place the monument to Martigues (code Insee 13056), in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Its approximate address, 9002 Fort de Bouc, reflects its isolation on the island. The inscription to the historic monuments in 1930 covers the whole of the fort, emphasizing its heritage importance as well as functional.
