Origin and history
The fortified tower of Dému, located in the Gers department in Occitanie, is an emblematic medieval vestige of the Gascon villages. It embodies a characteristic fortified door, incorporating a wooden staircase leading to the upper floors. Its defensive architecture is distinguished by broken arch openings and archers on the first level, reflecting the military construction techniques of the time.
The third floor of the tower still houses the dial of an old weight clock, whose mechanism is kept inside. This detail highlights its central role in community life, combining defensive function and public utility. The tower, classified as a Historic Monument since 1973 for its facades and roofs, now belongs to the commune of Dému.
The building, whose location is approximate (accuracy noted 5/10), bears witness to the systems of village fortification in Midi-Pyrénées. Its present state and its heritage protection make it an example studied of medieval civil architecture gasconne, although the sources available (Monumentum) do not specify its detailed history or its possible sponsors.
