The vault of the former fort (Box B 675): inscription by order of 29 August 1947
Origin and history
The Fortin de Rancé is a castle located in the commune of Genay, in the Rhône department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, it represents an example of medieval defensive architecture typical of this period. Although little documented, its inscription as historic monuments in 1947 bears witness to its heritage importance, particularly for its vault, the only part protected by decree.
In medieval times, forts like Rancé played a key role in protecting local territories and communication routes. In the Lyon region, these buildings often served as monitoring points or refuges for populations in the event of conflict. Their presence reflected a social organization marked by feudalism, where local lords defended their lands and vassals.
The fort of Rancé is thus part of a network of fortifications designed to secure the region, then subjected to frequent political and military tensions.
