Origin and history
The Fountain of Place Général-Spain, located in Aubusson, New Aquitaine, is a historic monument registered since 15 June 1926. Its origin dates back to the Middle Ages, although its present function differs from its original use. The basin of this fountain is in reality a baptismal tank, probably from Moutier-Rozeille Abbey, a nearby religious establishment whose history remains partially documented.
In 1770, this tank was transferred to the town of Aubusson by the canons of Notre-Dame du Mont, marking its transformation into a public fountain. This change of vocation illustrates the frequent reallocation of religious heritage after the Revolution or during ecclesiastical reforms. Today, the fountain stands on the Place General-Spain, in the heart of Aubusson, and constitutes an architectural and historical testimony of the region.
The monument, owned by the municipality, has been protected as historical monuments for nearly a century. Its inscription in 1926 underlines its heritage importance, both for its seniority and its connection to local religious history. The fountain thus embodies the collective memory of Aubusson, between medieval heritage and subsequent adaptations.
