Origin and history
The Fountain of Ségur-les-Villas was built in 1872 to meet a crucial need: the absence of public drinking facilities in the village. The municipality then decided to divert the sources of Farjou Pre to feed this fountain, located on the main square of the village. The project aimed to improve the living conditions of residents and animals, while modernizing local infrastructure.
Designed in Volvic stone, a resistant volcanic material typical of the region, the fountain consists of a circular basin and a central column decorated with four bearded masks from which the water jets flow. These decorative elements, combined with a stylized Corinthian capital, reflect an architectural style inspired by antiquity, while integrating local motifs such as the false scales of the dome.
The fountain is surmounted by a decorated vase and a bust of Marianne, symbol of the French Republic, affirming its role both utilitarian and emblematic. Since 1992, it has been protected as historical monuments, recognizing its heritage value and its importance in communal history. The property of the fountain still belongs to the municipality of Ségur-les-Villas.
Its location on the central square makes it a historic gathering point for the inhabitants. Sources also indicate an approximate location at 1 Rue de la Fontaine, although the exact GPS coordinates are not very accurate (level 6/10 according to Monumentum).
