Origin and history
The 18th century fountain of Arnouville, also known as Fountain of the 18s, is a historic monument inscribed by ministerial decree on 29 March 1929. Located in Place d'Arnouville (now Place de la République), it is an emblematic communal heritage of the city, in the department of Val-d'Oise. Its architecture and location reflect the urban developments typical of the Francilian villages under the Old Regime, where water points played a central role in everyday life.
The location of the fountain, attested by the Merimée and Monumentum bases, is considered satisfactory (note 7/10), although the available GPS coordinates place its approximate address in 4 place de la République. Owned by the commune of Arnouville-lès-Gonesse (code Insee 9501), it illustrates the 18th century hydraulic heritage in Île-de-France, a period marked by the development of water supply networks and the beautification of public spaces. No information is available about its architect, its sponsors, or any restorations after its protection.
The monument is part of a regional context where public fountains, often decorated with sculptures or basins, served both practical utility (water supply) and prestige symbol for local communities. In Île-de-France, these works were frequently associated with the village centres, as is the case here. Their preservation in the 20th century, through inscriptions under the title of Historical Monuments, has saved this heritage in the face of the growing urbanization of the Parisian suburbs.
