Fontaine de la Grand-Porte : inscription by order of 28 October 1949
Origin and history
The Fountain of the Grand-Porte de Malemort-du-Comtat is a building built during the 4th quarter of the 18th century. Located in the department of Vaucluse, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, it embodies the hydraulic and architectural heritage of this period. Its registration as a Historical Monument by order of 28 October 1949 bears witness to its heritage value recognized by the French authorities. The fountain is now owned by the commune of Malemort-du-Comtat, which ensures its preservation and maintenance within the framework of the local public domain.
At the end of the 18th century, public fountains played a central role in the life of provencal villages. They served not only as a water supply for the inhabitants, but also as a place of sociability and exchange. Their construction often reflected the hygienist and urbanistic concerns of the time, while integrating into local architectural aesthetics. The Fountain of the Grand Porte is part of this context, marking the urban area and facilitating access to water for rural populations and travellers.
The classification of the fountain in 1949 is part of a broader approach to the protection of French heritage after the Second World War. This period has seen many buildings, sometimes modest but representative of local history, be preserved for their historical or artistic interest. The location of the fountain, at 1 Boulevard de Calvias, and its state of conservation, considered a priori satisfactory (note 6/10), make it a still visible and accessible part of the heritage of Malemort-du-Comtat. No information is available on its current access to the public or on possible tourist functions.
