Origin and history

The Fountain of Wimille is a historical monument located in the municipality of Wimille, in the department of Pas-de-Calais (Hauts-de-France). Built in the 17th century, it embodies the architecture and water needs of this period, typical of rural villages in northern France. Its listing in the inventory of Historical Monuments by decree of 27 December 1972 underlines its heritage importance and its preservation by the commune.

In the 17th century, public fountains played a central role in the daily life of villages. They served as a gathering point for the inhabitants, facilitating access to drinking water and social exchanges. In Hauts-de-France, a region marked by an agricultural and artisanal economy, these hydraulic structures also reflected local technical skills in resource management.

The Fountain of Wimille, still located on Rue Léon Sergent, remains a remnant of this community organization.
