Origin and history
The fountain Saint-Julien de Brioude, located in the town of Brioude (Haute-Loire, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes), dates from the 12th century. It has been listed as historical monuments since 27 December 1972. According to 19th century representations, its capitals could come from a chapel or another fountain, suggesting a complex architectural history.
A local legend tells us that the fountain was built at the very location of the takeoff of St Julien, giving it a sacred and memorial dimension. sculpted elements, such as capitals, may date from the tenth century, although their exact origin remains uncertain.
Historical sources, including 19th-century descriptions, show that the fountain has undergone modifications or reuse of materials over the centuries. Its inscription in 1972 aims to preserve this heritage linked to both religious history and medieval architecture of the region.
