Origin and history
The Société's lime oven is an industrial vestige of the 19th century, located in Montmartin-sur-Mer, in the Manche department. This charcoal-operated oven illustrates a specific lime production technique, with a small gallery of 7 to 8 meters equipped with openings and pipes to regulate heating. It ceased operations around 1920, marking the end of a period of intensive local production.
The site has been listed as historic monuments since May 22, 1989, recognizing its heritage importance. Owned by the commune, it bears witness to Norman industrial history and the exploitation of local resources, such as limestone, essential to the manufacture of lime. Its architecture and functioning reflect the technical know-how of the time, now preserved for their historical value.
Located instead of the Courtils, the oven is identified in the Merimée base under the BZ 274 cadastre. Its approximate address, 37 Rue du Docteur André Pigaux, allows to situate it in the urban fabric of Montmartin-sur-Mer. Although its current condition and conditions of visit are not detailed, its classification makes it a key element of Normandy's industrial heritage.
